Almario Vernand "Mario" Chalmers is an American basketball player in the NBA G League for Grand Rapids Gold. He was born on May 19, 1986, and was a part of the college basketball team at the University of Kansas for three seasons. Chalmers was the 34th pick in the 2008 NBA draft for the Minnesota Timberwolves team. He was also a member of the 2007-08 national championship team. He has won championships from school to college and professional level. He was given the 2006-07 Co-Defensive Player of the Year title. In 2008 he was honored with the "Most Outstanding Player" and the "Co-Defensive Player Of The Year" at the NCAA Men's League.

Personal life

Mario's parents, Ronnie and Almarie Chalmers, were actively involved in basketball. Ronnie Chalmers was a former head basketball coach in Bartlett High School. In addition, he played the role of assistant coach at the University of Kansas. Almarie Mosely Chalmers has coaching experience in the game and wrote a book, "The Ball Is In Your Court: Embracing Your Child's Dream."

Mario Chalmers has a daughter, Queen Elizabeth Chalmers, and three sons, Prynce Almario Chalmers, Zachiah Almario Chalmers, and one whose name is not known to the public. One of his cousins, Lionel Chalmers, is a former Los Angeles Cripplers guard, and Chris Smith, the former Minnesota Timberwolves guard. Mario's older sister, Roneka, lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, which the Chalmer family called home for some time.

High School Life and Career

Chalmers went to Bartlett High School in Anchorage, Alaska, where he was honored with 4A State Player of the Year for three consecutive years. Trajan Langdon is the only other player to achieve this feat. In 2002 and 2003, he took his team to the state championships, whereas in 2004, they were the runners-up. He was entitled "McDonald's All-American" and "Parade All-American." He was given a 5 star by the recruiters and was considered second on the list of point guards and the No.12 player in the nation in 2005.

College Career

When it came to graduation, he had several choices like North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Arizona, and Wake Forest before he finally took admission to the University of Kansas.

In freshman year, Chalmers became only the second player to have been awarded Conference Player Of the Week and National Freshman Of The Week twice. Also, after helping Kansas win the Big 12 tournament, he was awarded the MVP title.

Chalmers was honored with the Co-Defensive Player Of The Year with Oklahoma State's Marcus Dove during the sophomore year. He also became the first player in Kansas state basketball history to have 97 steals in a single season.

During his junior year, he maintained an average of 12.8 points throughout the year. His assists average was 4.3 per game, with 46.8% accuracy in the three-pointer shots. He had 97 steals in his record, which became his school cord. He also led the team to victory in the 2008 NCAA Championship with his 3-pointer shot in the last 2.1 seconds left against Memphis Tigers. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament in the Jayhawks fifth national title. Seeing his talent, he was drafted into the NBA in 2008.

To honor his legacy, the University of Kansas retired his jersey #15. Sacramento 99-128. He had 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

  • Highest Assists: On February 8, 2009, he set a career-high record of 13 assists against Charlotte, 96-92. He also scored 16 points,2 rebounds, and 2 steals in that match.
  • Highest Steals: On November 5, 2005, he got 9 steals in an NBA match Miami's home win against Philadelphia 106-83. He scored 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists in that match.
  • Highest blocks: On January 26, 2008, he went for 3 blocks, setting a record in his career in an NCAA match of Kansas Jayhawks home win against Nebraska Cornhuskers 84-49. He also scored 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 7 assists.
  • Highest Efficiency: On January 12, 2013, in an NBA game, Mario set an efficiency of 35 in Miami's road win against Sacramento 99-128. He also scored 24 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists in the match.
