Kristian Varner is a talented and experienced defensive lineman who has played for both the University of North Carolina and Georgia Southern. Throughout his college career, he has shown a strong commitment to his team and a dedication to improving his skills on the field.
Kristian Sean Varner was born on June 12 in Atlanta, he is the son of Emmadequann Bray and Keaton Johnson. Varner attended Hiram High School where he played for Coach Pete Fominaya. He was listed as the No. 76 player in the state of Georgia by Rivals and considered a three-star prospect according to ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports. He earned first-team all-region honors as a senior, and posted 44 tackles, including four sacks, an interception, and two forced fumbles. As a junior, he Tallied 30 tackles, including two sacks, and 2.5 tackles for loss.
In 2022-23, his final season with Georgia Southern, he played in all 13 games and started in 10 of them. He was on the field for 450 defensive snaps, and recorded 21 tackles for the season. He had a tackle in the opener against Morgan State, posted three tackles in the win against Nebraska, had two tackles at UAB and one against Ball State, and had a tackle at Georgia State. He played 53 snaps in the win over No. 25 James Madison, played 25 defensive snaps in the win at Old Dominion, had three tackles against South Alabama, posted two tackles at Louisiana, had three tackles against Marshall, posted four tackles in the overtime win over App State, and had a tackle in the Camellia Bowl against Buffalo.
In 2021-22, he played in six games for the Tar Heels before entering the NCAA Transfer Portal in November. He had two tackles on the season, and played 41 total snaps on defense, including 20 in the opener at Virginia Tech. He had both tackles in that game. He committed to Georgia Southern in November and enrolled in January. He made the Honor Roll in the spring for posting a 3.00 GPA or higher.
In 2020-21, he made three appearances on the defensive line at the University of North Carolina. He saw game action against Syracuse, Duke, and Western Carolina. He notched a tackle for loss against the Catamounts.
In 2019-20, he played in one game for the University of North Carolina and was redshirted.
